The special Law Commission on the Review of the Refugees Act conducted its National Validation Conference at Sunbird Capital Hotel, Lilongwe.
The Commission convened key stakeholders, drawn from both the public and private sector, in validating its findings and recommendations of the Act. The discussions focused on issues of:
(a) Conceptualisation and Definition of Refugee;
(b) Institutional Arrangement regarding the composition of the Department of Refugees and bodies responsible for, among others, refugee status determination;
(c) Process of refugee status determination;
(d) Protection and management of asylum seekers and refugees;
(e) Rights and Obligations of Asylum Seekers and refugees; and
(f) End of Refugee Status through cancellation, revocation and cessation of status or naturalisation of refugees in Malawi.
The Meeting was honoured by the presence of the Minister of Homeland Security, Honourable Peter Mukhitho.
The Review of the Refugees Act and the National Validation Conference has been carried out with support of the Malawi Government and the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR).
