The Law Commission, through its Civic Education Section, conducted an awareness session on the Marriage, Divorce and Family Relations Act and the Deceased Estates Act for members of staff from the Office of the Ombudsman.
The session forms part of a series of activities organized by the Commission targeting government ministries, departments, and other stakeholders. These initiatives directly contribute to one of the Commission’s core mandate —to promote public awareness of the Laws of Malawi and the Constitution. In her remarks, the Ombudsman, Honourable Grace Malera, thanked the Law Commission for organising such an orientation describing it as eye opening.
Before this meeting, the Civic Education Section also conducted a similar meeting with members of staff of the Commission and National Library Service.
Speaking during the opening remarks of the staff orientation at the Commission, the Director of Law Reform, Mr. Mike Chinoko, emphasized the importance of ensuring that the general public is well informed about the Laws of Malawi, particularly those governing marriage and deceased estates. He noted that many people face challenges in handling such matters due to a lack of knowledge and understanding of the applicable laws.
